OPINION - The only hotel with a volcano in its garden

“We want to stay longer”
We stumbled across this charming lodge and farm on our journey to see volcan turrialba.
We were so lucky to meet the actual owner who had just arrived from san jose.
His hospitality during the single hour we spent there was marvellous..he treated us to some cheese made on their own dairy farm and was so helpful and informative.
The only reason we didnt stay longer was because we were booked and paid up elsewhere.
We plan to return next year to stay 2 nights and go on their horse ride to the base of the volcano.

“Great views and great service”
Our stay at the lodge was wonderful and the service attentive. The rooms were clean and cozy and the beds were piled with warm blankets. The meals were excellent and tasty and were a great way to try some authentic Costa Rican food. We took a three hour tour (walking) along the base the of the Irazu and Turrialba volcanoes and really enjoyed it. The staff even provided us with rubber boots to wear for the hike because the trails were so muddy. The view of the volcano was amazing.
The lodge provides simple lodging without a lot of frills so those looking for luxury may not enjoy it however for us it was perfect. Despite being only 60kms from San Jose the trip took about 2 and a half hours by taxi due to the winding and poor condition of the mountain roads - once there you are better to enjoy the excellent food, nature and tours the lodge has to offer rather than trying to use it as a base for day tripping. One other point - the staff speak and understand limited English - we had a Spanish phrase book with us which came in really handy and helped bridge the communication gap. Staff were very supportive and patient with us and our attempts to communicate in Spanish and did everything they could to help bridge the communication gap.

“Great experience”
This hotel is quaint and beautiful. Breathtaking views of the volcano on a clear day. Rooms are well equipped, the wooden stove is a great little added benefit to complete the whole "finca" feeling (farm). Food is simple yet carefully prepared and served wtih the upmost attention to detail. The staff is nice and very knowledgeable. So basically I am saying this is a must visit experience if you are looking to see what CR is all about, check what our roots are like. Get to see an active volcano!! I mean come on how awesome is that. I highly recommend you try the lamb at the restaurant it is amazing. Visit the hotel, visit it soon!!

"An amazing place in the mountains with agritourism"
The place is very close to San José, with gardens that are more a sheep and cattle farm. You can watch the milking of the sheep, and cheese are delicious.
Those who work there are simple people of the place, very friendly and helpful.
It is a great place for fresh air, horseback riding, and admire nature.

"Lost World"
If you want to go to the Turrialba volcano, unique in the country to which you can reach the same craters, Turrialba Volcano Lodge is what is closest and possibly the only site that allows not having to climb from Santa Cruz or lower for roads impossible slope and difficult even for 4x4. We arrive without prior booking during low season, which quite surprised maintenance man, the only person in the hotel. Specifically brought up the cook but then came a French couple with whom we were six guests in 3 rooms available. For $ 45 cenabas, slept, and ate breakfast. The food was not bad, although it was noted that not expecting anyone and had to improvise. The rooms were simple but clean and spacious with en suite facilities. But we had problems with hot water. From there, organized climbing the volcano on horseback for $ 30 per person, and trips to see quetzales, wonderful birds that usually hang out there (it was not our case). We did see a lot of hummingbirds that came to drink sugar water in the troughs of the hotel. All pretty makeshift, but worth it to see the volcano, amazing and scary at the same time. Amazing landscape

"The ultimate in comfort and stunning views"
My family and I will never forget our stay at the Turrialba Volcano Lodge. Just to get to the Lodge was an adventure, driving up into the mountains and finally arrive in the picturesque Lodge, where we received a warm welcome by the staff. The old wood fire stoves in the rooms are lovely and quite necessary as the coldest night. There are a number of different excursions available on horseback or on foot, but we decided to do our own exploring the property, which is rich and lusciously green. Breakfast was amazing, all the ingredients were fresh and local, and coffee is the best I've ever had. There is a great opportunity for those who like to see birds here, there are plenty who live in the surrounding areas, including the Resplendent Quetzal. We were lucky enough to see the sights of a window in the restaurant. The first morning was rainy and foggy bottom, but our second day there was beautiful and we could see the smoke plume from the volcano in all its glory. I highly recommend this Lodge for those seeking a close and personal experience Costa Rica.
